The Flip Side: To Speak or Not To Speak

Getting to the point, but first read my last blog post.

Is it okay for some Deaf people to tell other what their choice of communication should be?

Is it okay for one Deaf person to tell another Deaf person, “You should not talk, only sign.”?

Is it okay to say we devalue ASL if we talk?

You can probably guess my personal opinion: I say No, for each of these questions.

I’d like to know what you think. Whether you agree with me or not, I’m curious to know your thoughts. For my part, I will stand up for my right to talk and still be the deaf person that I am. I will also stand up for my right to sign, because I want that as well. And I will stand up for your right to choose whatever form of communication you want to choose, whether it’s one method or 101 methods.

Enjoy your weekend!

This will most likely never happen.

It’s very unrealistic, and is pretty much the opposite of what’s normal today, but WHAT IF…

What if hearing people told deaf people, “No, you’re not allowed to speak. Deaf people shouldn’t speak. You must use sign language or write. No talking.” (As a potential and ridiculous reason, because some of us don’t always speak clearly.)

Would we then be fighting for our right to speak?

(FYI, for those who haven’t read my past blogs: I am profoundly deaf and use ASL, and I speak. Depends on who I’m communicating with.)

I Dare You

I dare you to…

…think something nice about someone who has angered or frustrated you.
…let them know, even if you think they’d never do it for you.
…delete the next thing you start typing that is name-calling, or something you wouldn’t want said to you.
…imagine people as the children they used to be, when their words or actions “push your buttons.”
…write a blog or sign a vlog about something entirely positive, using positive language.
…do a favor for someone you don’t know well.
…send a thank you note to your favorite interpreter, teacher, VRS company, restaurant, neighbor, or anyone else.
…look for the best in someone even if you really don’t think there’s anything to find that you’d like. You never know.
…say you’re sorry when and if you realize you did something to be sorry about.
…do whatever your hero/idol would do.

Subliminal Message

I like to read stories that transport me to another place and time. Do you do the same? This is probably why I started writing again two years ago, filling my own tale with trolls and sprites and goblins. Though I am not yet a success as a writer, at least by my own definition, the road is before me and I aim to follow it.

What road are you going to take today?
